Improving Skin Cancer Diagnosis

Overview

A university hospital was struggling to meet the performance standards for its suspected skin cancer pathway. With a growing number of cases, the hospital needed additional support to manage the increased patient load.

The existing one-stop model needed to be expanded to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment, preventing delays that could adversely impact patient outcomes.

KPI:Health partnered with the trust to provide additional capacity by replicating the hospital’s in-week one-stop model during weekends.

By operating on weekends, our team ensured that patients received the necessary diagnostic services without extending their waiting times, allowing for prompt and accurate identification of skin cancer cases.

Within three months of implementing the weekend one-stop model, the hospital’s performance on the suspected skin cancer pathway improved significantly, exceeding the 75% standard.

This increase in capacity not only enhanced the cancer pathway but also allowed the hospital to reallocate its in-house dermatologists to the general dermatology pathway.

As a result, the Trust was able to address the 52-week wait backlog for general dermatology cases, optimising patient flow and improving overall service delivery.
